PAST EVENT: Martin Luther King Day of Service-2014

The Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday is a National Day of Service, and a time to re-commit ourselves to serving each other and our communities. With the theme “MLK Day: Citizenship and Service in Action,” the Martin Luther King Day of Service provides an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in service events that make a difference in their communities.

On January 20, 2014, Americans across the country will honor Dr. King by helping their neighbors and communities. Led by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the MLK Day of Service will include thousands of projects spread across all 50 states. Families, students, congregations, employees, and individuals will come together to celebrate MLK Day by taking part in a project to make a difference in their communities. Projects will include delivering meals, refurbishing schools and community centers, collecting food and clothing, signing up mentors, supporting veterans and military families, promoting nonviolence, and more, with many projects starting on MLK Day and lasting throughout the year.

This year, CNCS is working on a few signature initiatives and tools. They include:

  • MLK Drum Majors for Service. This initiative provides organizations the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate volunteers who perform extraordinary everyday acts of service with reliability and commitment, but who seldom receive recognition. Drum Major awardees are presented with a President’s Volunteer Service Award through CNCS, for which they receive a personalized, certificate of achievement and a congratulatory letter from the President of the United States.
  •  Student Art Contest. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, K-12 students are invited to create a poster that inspires others to serve and answers Dr. King’s question, “What are you doing for others?” Grand prize winning students will receive a Samsung tablet and have the opportunity to have their artwork displayed at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bookstore. Teachers of the winning students will also receive $1,200 in prizes.
  •  Project Toolkits. These Toolkits are available to the public to help citizens plan a service project that will positively impact their community and engage their fellow citizens in meaningful action. The Toolkits, which are organized by category, provide tips and guidance on planning, implementing, and following up after a service event. Citizens can register their project to recruit volunteers.

The best way to honor Dr. King is through service and volunteering in our communities. Dr. King devoted his life to advancing equality, justice, and economic opportunity for all. He challenged us to build a more perfect union and taught us that everyone has a role to play. Five decades later, we still have work to do to realize Dr. King's dream.
