The purpose of this program is to support states and Tribes with implementing youth (up to age 24) suicide prevention and early intervention strategies in schools, educational institutions, juvenile justice systems, substance use and mental health programs, foster care systems, pediatric health programs, and other child- and youth-serving organizations.

The Demonstrating Policy Effectiveness to Promote Black Youth Mental Health Initiative aims to identify the health and wellness policies that are successful in improving Black youth mental health, including suicide prevention. The demonstration projects are expected to: (1) implement evidence-based policies for addressing Black youth mental and suicide prevention; (2) pilot the policy assessment protocols that determine the level of effectiveness of general health and wellness policies in improving Black youth mental health in diverse settings; and (3) develop and implement demonstrations of selected innovative and culturally effective policy approaches to improve Black youth mental health. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: This initiative aligns with: (1) recommendations from the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Emergency Taskforce outlined in “Ring the Alarm: The Crisis of Black Suicide in America”; and (2) Healthy People 2030 Mental Health Disorder and Adolescent Health Objectives MHMD-02 (Reduce suicide attempts by adolescents) and AH-D02 (Increase the proportion of children and adolescents with symptoms of trauma who get treatment).

The purpose of this SAMHSA grant program is to support states and tribes with implementing youth suicide prevention and early intervention strategies in schools, educational institutions, juvenile justice systems, substance use programs, mental health programs, foster care systems, and other child and youth-serving organizations. It is expected that this program will: (1) increase the number of youth-serving organizations who are able to identify and refer youth at risk of suicide; (2) increase the capacity of clinical service providers to assess, manage, and treat youth at risk of suicide; and (3) improve the continuity of care and follow-up of youth identified to be at risk for suicide, including those who have been discharged from emergency department and inpatient psychiatric units.

Proposed as a priority under the Suicide Prevention Transformational Project Strategic Plan, this funding opportunity is aligned with NIMHs commitment to support research that builds on existing efforts to understand and prevent youth suicide, especially for groups at elevated risk. This funding opportunity aims to better identify and understand risk factors that contribute to recent increases in suicide among Black Youth as well as protective factors that may be targeted for future interventions.

This notice announces the opportunity to apply for funding under the Children’s Safety Network (CSN) program. The purpose of this program is to increase the capacity of Title V agencies1 to adopt and implement evidence-based child and adolescent safety programs, practices, and policies, with a specific focus on injury and violence prevention-related Title V performance and outcome measures, such as injury hospitalizations, bullying, safe sleep, and suicide, as well as leading causes of injury-related deaths among children and adolescents (e.g., motor vehicle crashes, firearms, and poisonings). The overarching goal of this program is to reduce infant, child, and adolescent injury hospitalizations and deaths. This program will: • Provide technical assistance (TA) and capacity-building services to state Title V agencies, including implementing learning collaboratives. • Develop and disseminate up-to-date injury prevention resources. • Maintain a coalition of national, state, and local agencies and other key injury prevention stakeholders. • Increase coordination with Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) programs, resource centers, and partner organizations on injury prevention activities. The Program will collect and report on baseline data in Year 1 (June 1, 2023 – May 31, 2024) and subsequently achieve the following core objectives/targets by May 31, 2028: • Provide individual TA to at least 25 states and jurisdictions on child and adolescent safety. • Develop and disseminate at least 15 written resources, 25 public webinars, 25 state TA Webinars, and publish at least 6 peer-reviewed journal articles on child and adolescent safety. • Document that at least 90% of teams participating in the learning collaboratives report increased knowledge and application of child safety quality improvement strategies. • Document that at least 50% of teams participating in the learning collaborative report implementing evidence-driven practices, programs, and policies. • Increase by at least 50% the number of MCHB programs, resource centers, and partner organizations collaborating and coordinating with CSN. The purpose of this program is to prevent health and behavioral health risks (e.g., suicide, depression, homelessness, drug use, HIV) and to promote well-being for LGBTQI+ youth in the context of their families/caregivers, cultures, and communities by establishing LGBTQI+ family counseling and support programs and training providers on family counseling and support interventions.

The purpose of this R34 NOFO is to provide resources for evaluating the feasibility, acceptability, and safety of novel approaches that are uniquely tailored to the risk profiles of these populations, that will improve outcomes and modify health risk behavior. Resources may also be used for obtaining the preliminary data needed as a prerequisite to a larger-scale (efficacy or effectiveness) services study. The goal is to support research that develops and tests broadly implementable service system interventions to rapidly identify and effectively respond to reduce suicide and suicidal behavior in various groups of at-risk youth. Specifically, the goals of this NOFO are to: 1) develop a multi-level service system intervention that coordinates suicide risk identification, evaluation, and linkage to needed treatment and services for a specifically identified at-risk youth group; 2) test the feasibility and effectiveness of the intervention in detecting and reducing suicide risk and suicidal behavior in the at-risk youth group; and 3) demonstrate the intervention's implementation and potential for future uptake in underserved, under-resourced community settings where additional at-risk youth are most likely to receive care. The ultimate goal of this NOFO is to develop and test the effectiveness of evidence-based strategies for detecting and preventing suicide and suicidal behavior among at-risk youth. It focuses on systems interventions to improve outcomes for youth and is not intended to support the development of new screening tools or assessment instruments.
