Details
The program was evaluated using a randomized controlled trial design involving American Indian youth recruited from a large high school in Rapid City, South Dakota. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group that received the yearlong Ateyapi program or a control group that received access to the same mentors as the youth in the intervention group. Surveys were administered before the program (baseline), nine months after condition assignment, and 15 months after condition assignment.
The study found that nine months after condition assignment, youth participating in the program were no less likely to report having had sex in the past three months.
