Be yoU, Talented, Informed, Fearless, Uncompromised, and Loved (BUtiful) was evaluated using an randomized control trial involving Black women ages 18 to 19, currently residing in either Jefferson or Orleans Parish, Louisiana. Participants were recruited from various college settings and via flyers posted in the local communities. Participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention group that immediately received access to the four-week, eight-module web-based program or a control group that received an attention controlled, web-based program called DIVAS. Surveys and biological testing (pregnancy, chlamydia, and gonorrhea) were administered to both groups immediately at baseline and at six and 12 months.

The study found that at the six-month follow-up, Black adolescent women participating in the intervention were not statistically different with regard to whether they were more likely to consistently use contraception, their rates of pregnancy, and their rates of STI infections (gonorrhea and chlamydia).

The study reported on an additional eligible outcome at the six-month follow-up that received a low rating: initiation of reliable contraception. Finally, the study reported on four eligible outcomes at the 12-month follow-up that received a low rating: initiation of reliable contraceptives, initiation of dual-method contraception, presence of an STI (either chlamydia or gonorrhea), and pregnancy.

The study also examined program impacts on intention to use condoms and intention to use reliable contraception. Findings for these outcomes were not considered for the review because they fell outside the scope of the review.

NA = Not available. This means the authors did not report the information in the manuscripts associated with the studies we reviewed.

a This information was not available whenever authors did not report information for the treatment and comparison groups separately on outcome means, standard deviations, and/or sample sizes.

b Authors reported that the program effect (impact) estimate is statistically significant with a p-value of less than 0.05 based on a two-tailed test.

c For some outcomes, having less of that outcome is favorable. In those cases, an effect with a negative sign is favorable to the treatment group (that is, the treatment group had a more favorable outcome than the comparison group, on average).

d An effect shows credibly estimated, statistically significant evidence whenever it has a p-value of less than 0.05 based on a two-tailed test, includes the appropriate adjustment for clustering (if applicable), and it is not based on an endogenous subgroup.
