Child and Youth Victimization Known to Police, School and Medical Authorities
This report from the Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlines what types of violence children report and what professionals are aware of the reported violence. The report shows that 46 percent of victimized children were known to school, police, or medical authorities.
Children in Foster Care with Parents in Federal Prison: A Toolkit for Child Welfare Agencies, Federal Prisons, and Residential Reentry Centers
Roughly 10% of incarcerated mothers in state prison have a child in a foster home or other state care. Some estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 8 children who are subjects of reports of maltreatment and investigated by child welfare agencies have parents who were recently arrested. Though there is clearly overlap between the prison system and the child welfare system, it is often difficult for prison officials to know how to help incarcerated parents stay in touch with their children in foster care and work towards reunification. Similarly, it is difficult for child welfare agencies to know how to engage parents in prison. The purpose of this toolkit is to help facilitate communication and cooperation between child welfare agencies and federal prisons so that parents can stay engaged in their children's lives.
Changing Lives: Prevention and Intervention to Reduce Serious Offending

Changing Course: Preventing Gang Membership
The NIJ and CDC have jointly published a book that uses current research and evidence on youth gang involvement to form recommendations for policymakers on the effective use of taxpayer dollars in gang membership prevention. DoD, DOJ Sexual Assault Response Advocate Training
The DoD and DOJ’s OVC collaborated to produce the Advanced Military Sexual Assault Advocate Training curriculum. This 20-hour online course builds on the skills learned during initial certification. This course provides sexual assault advocacy skills training through role-playing scenarios that require course participation and interactivity. The development and implementation of this advanced training is part of DoD’s ongoing efforts to educate response professionals and add to the quality of support that sexual assault victims receive.
Curriculum for Training Educators of Youth in Confinement
To help teachers address issues surrounding youth in confinement, the National Juvenile Detention Association's Center for Research and Professional Development (CRPD) has developed a National Training Curriculum for Educators of Youth in Confinement Facilities (Educator's Curriculum). Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice Issues 2013 Report
This report makes recommendations to the President, Congress, and OJJDP on four areas of major concern to the juvenile justice community: evidence-based youth justice practices, youth engagement, youth justice and schools, and youth justice and disproportionate minority contact. These recommendations were formed through research and reviews by FACJJ’s expert subcommittees and through feedback from state advisory groups, state juvenile justice specialists, and state disproportionate minority contact coordinators.
