Improving Attachment Between Mothers and Children
This article describes a recent study on whether new mothers dealing with past trauma would be able to develop an attachment to their babies. If the mothers could develop an attachment, the study examined if addressing the mother’s issue would help with bonding. The results show that all the mothers in the study who were dealing with past trauma had trouble bonding with others and over 75% of the mothers with unresolved trauma had insecurely attached infants. The researchers found that being in the process of dealing with past trauma can help mothers form secure bonds with their children, despite the mothers themselves having difficulty attaching to others around them.
2014 NSDUH Report on Mental and Substance Use Disorders
SAMHSA’s 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health report shows progress in reducing substance use, especially among adolescents. However, it also indicates that adolescents are experiencing higher levels of depression than in past years.

Traumatic Stress and Suicide after Disasters
This report highlights research on disasters (PDF, 21 pages) and their relationship to traumatic stress, suicide rates, and suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts. It examines rates of suicide and suicidal thinking and behaviors following disasters as well as the populations that may be at risk for traumatic stress and suicide after disasters.
5 Tips for Providing Trauma-Informed Sex Education
This article highlights the work of two researchers who are pioneering changes in sex education that bridge the gap between sex education and trauma-informed care by better understanding how sex education could be more sensitive to students’ traumatic experiences. This article also offers tips, based on this research, for implementing a trauma informed approach to sex education.

Suicide and Race
This blog post highlights recent research which found that from 1993 to 2012, school-aged suicide trends stayed constant, but suicide incidence in black children significantly increased. The post describes the need for more research into risk and protective factors for African American children and the experiences that put them more at risk for depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. It also provides resources for individuals who want to learn more about suicide prevention or who may know someone who is at risk of harming themselves.
Webinar Recording: Bullying Prevention and Suicide Prevention for Schools
The recording is now available for the webinar, Bullying Prevention and Suicide Prevention for Schools: A Digital Approach From SAMHSA, presented by SAMHSA and the American School Health Association. The webinar provided an overview of the risk and impact of bullying and suicide in school-aged children and highlighted the connection between these public health issues and the "whole child" concept. The webinar also showcased SAMHSA's mobile applications, KnowBullying and Suicide Safe, and other key tools to promote bullying prevention and suicide prevention in schools.

Report: Testing Interpretation Bias Training (IBT)
This report describes a new, large-scale study that will test IBT, a computer game designed to diminish the tendency of children with disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) to view ambiguous faces as angry. This study will also test cognitive behavioral therapy in conjunction with IBT in an effort to establish the first non-drug interventions for those with DMDD.
Report: Serious Thoughts of Suicide Among Young Adults
This report (PDF, 7 pages) provides state-by-state data on the level of young adults, ages 18-25, who have had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year, based on data from the 2013-2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
