Upcoming Event: November is National Adoption Month
This observance aims to increase national awareness of the need for permanent families for children and youth in the foster care system. This year’s theme, “We Never Outgrow the Need for Family—Just Ask Us,” reflects a focus on the importance of identifying permanent families for the thousands of 15- to 18-year-olds in foster care who are currently less likely to be adopted or who may age out of the system without a stable home. A new tip sheet, Talking with Older Youth About Adoption (PDF, 2 pages) provides child welfare professionals with a framework for how to talk with older youth about permanency and includes suggestions for how to make these conversations more effective.
National Strategy for Youth Preparedness Education: Empowering, Educating, and Building Resilience

It identifies nine key steps, each associated with one or more short- and long-term activities that are critical to fulfilling the vision of a prepared youth community.

This guide, from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services, aims to help organizations and communities to develop new, or enhance existing, reunification elements of emergency preparedness plans, focusing on the reunification of children separated from their parents or legal guardians during disasters. This data set provides information on program-level outcomes of college students preparing for gainful employment that can be used by prospective students and their families to weigh their options. Overall, the data show graduates of career training programs at public institutions generally fare better than those of comparable programs at for-profit colleges, earning higher salaries and being more prepared to enter higher earning fields.
Report: National Student Loan FY 2014 Cohort Default Rate
These data describe the FY 2014 cohort student loan default rate, which increased slightly from 11.3% to 11.5% for students who entered repayment between fiscal years 2013 and 2014. During the tracking period, more than five million borrowers entered repayment and 580,671 of them defaulted on their loans.

Bureau of Justice Assistance: Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force Initiative
The Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force Initiative includes training for law enforcement and communities to identify trafficking in persons and rescue victims by working with federal law enforcement and victims service providers and offering support and funding to task forces (in coordination with the Office for Victims of Crime and the Department of Health and Human Services) based on a sound strategy of collaboration among state and local enforcement, trafficking victim services providers, federal law enforcement, and U.S. Attorney Offices.

New Modules Developed for Sexual Assault Advocate/Counselor Training
OVCTTAC has developed three new modules for its online Sexual Assault Advocate/Counselor Training. This training is designed to teach advocates how to provide competent, effective crisis intervention services to victims and survivors of sexual assault.
New Modules Added to VAT Online
OVC’s Victim Assistance Training (VAT) Online offers service providers online training opportunities to better assist victims of crime. Five new modules can now be found on VAT Online addressing sexual assault, LGBTQ populations, victims with substance abuse issues, financial crimes, and identity theft.
