New Report on Prevalence of Teen Dating Violence

This report describes the overall prevalence of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence victimization in the United States using data from 2011. It reveals that nearly 54% of all female victims and 48% of all male victims experienced their first victimizations before age 25, many of whom were first victimized during childhood or adolescence.

Updated Training: DATING MATTERS® — Understanding Teen Dating Violence Prevention
CDC released an updated version of its VetoViolence training, DATING MATTERS®: Understanding Teen Dating Violence Prevention. DATING MATTERS ® is a free online course available to educators, school personnel, youth mentors, and other professionals that highlights what teen dating violence is and how to prevent it. New features include a fresh user experience, graphic novel scenarios, interactive exercises, and updated resources.

This program is a five-year cooperative agreement supporting 10 state domestic violence coalitions as they focus on primary prevention of intimate partner violence. This helpline provides accessible safety planning, crisis counseling, and culturally relevant referrals for Native survivors of domestic and dating violence. Developed by FYSB’s Family Youth Prevention and Services Program, the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline, this hotline is the first to provide culturally-appropriate, anonymous, confidential service specifically for Native American survivors. The helpline is 1-844-7NATIVE (1-844-762-8483) and is operational 10:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday.

Preventing Teen Dating Violence and Youth Violence Program
Different types of violence are connected and often share the same root causes. CDC’s Preventing Teen Dating and Youth Violence by Addressing Shared Risk and Protective Factors program funds 5 local health departments to engage in primary prevention activities to prevent teen dating violence and youth violence.

This sourcebook looks at the effectiveness of four types of violence prevention strategies: parents and family-based; home visiting; social-cognitive; and mentoring. The sourcebook documents the science behind each best practice and offers a comprehensive directory of resources for more information about programs that have used these practices.

”Child Maltreatment, 2013” (PDF, 250 pages) is the 24th edition of the annual report on child abuse and neglect data collected through the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System. According to the report, from 2009 to 2013, overall rates of victimization declined from 9.3 to 9.1 per 1,000 children in the population.

The Children's Bureau seeks to improve the safety, permanency and well-being of children through leadership, support for necessary services, and productive partnerships with states, tribes, and communities. It has the primary responsibility for administering federal programs that support state child welfare services.

Free Violence Prevention Course
Principles of Prevention is a free, online violence prevention training, available on the CDC’s VetoViolence website. This dynamic and interactive course teaches the key concepts of primary prevention, the public health approach, and the social-ecological model. It also features interviews with leading experts and compelling stories, helps professionals to understand the fundamentals of effective violence prevention, and helps them to become familiar with the growing body of research on what works.
