CDC Preparedness Resources for Schools
Schools and education agencies cannot prevent natural disasters, or even many man-made crises, but they can help students prepare for and plan to respond to such emergencies. Resources are available to help schools, education agencies, and institutions of higher education develop such plans, usually in collaboration with public health and first responder agencies.
Contribution of Excessive Alcohol Consumption to Deaths and Years of Potential Life Lost in the United States
This study aimed to update the national estimates of alcohol-attributable deaths (AAD) and years of potential life lost (YPLL) in the United States. The results show that excessive drinking accounted for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults and remains a leading cause of premature mortality nationwide. About 5% of all average annual AAD and 10% of average annual YPLL involved individuals under 21 years of age.
Cigarette Smoking Among U.S. High School Students at Lowest Level in 22 Years
According to the results of the 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), rates of cigarette smoking among high school students have dropped (PDF, 1 page) to the lowest levels since the YRBS began in 1991. By achieving a teen smoking rate of 15.7 percent, the United States has met its national Healthy People 2020 objective of reducing adolescent cigarette use to 16 percent or less.
Current Tobacco Use Among Middle and High School Students — United States, 2011
As illustrated in this report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, data from the 2011 National Youth Tobacco Survey reveals that during 2000–2011, there was a linear downward trend observed in the prevalence of current tobacco use, current combustible tobacco use, and current cigarette use among middle and high school students.

Measuring Bullying Victimization, Perpetration, and Bystander Experiences: A Compendium of Assessment Tools
This document provides researchers, prevention specialists, and health educators with tools to measure a range of bullying experiences: bully perpetration, bully victimization, bully-victim experiences, and bystander experiences. Some researchers continue to examine the risk and protective factors associated with bullying experiences. Others are working to design, implement, and evaluate bully prevention interventions aimed at reducing bully victimization and perpetration, as well as increasing prosocial bystander involvement in bullying situations. The ability to measure bullying experiences broadly and completely is crucial to the success of these activities. This document represents a starting point from which researchers can consider a set of psychometrically sound measures for assessing self-reported incidence and prevalence of a variety of bullying experiences.

This report describes the changes and updates made to the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System since 2004, and provides results of methods studies that systematically examined how different survey procedures affect prevalence estimates.
Prepregnancy Contraceptive Use Among Teens with Unintended Pregnancies Resulting in Live Births, 2004–2008
Data from this Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report from January 2012 offers insight into current statistics about teens not using contraception, teens who give birth, the risks of early childbearing, and why this is a public health issue. The data was collected from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), which collects state-specific, population-based data on maternal attitudes and experiences before, during, and shortly after pregnancy.
Robbing the Future: Smoking and Youth
A new video, “Robbing the Future,” explores the various ways the tobacco industry targets young people, as well as the growing popularity of products like e-cigarettes and the dangers associated with their use. An accompanying fact sheet (PDF, 2 pages) includes information about the health effects of tobacco use, e-cigarettes, and secondhand smoke among youth and young adults, and the ways in which cigarettes are marketed to young people.

This Centers for Disease Control and Prevention created suicide prevention resources developed from federal and local partnerships. The site contains information about a national strategy for suicide prevention, data and trends, and youth-specific information.

A national initiative to prevent youth violence before it starts. STRYVE's vision is safe and healthy youth who can achieve their full potential as connected and contributing members of thriving, violence-free families, schools, and communities. Their website includes training materials focused on understanding youth violence, the public health approach, and creating a plan along with a wealth of other resources and information.
The Relationship Between Bullying and Suicide: What We Know and What It Means for Schools
This resource from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Violence Prevention, provides school administrators, teachers and school staff with the most current research findings about the relationship between bullying and suicide among school-aged youth and action-oriented, evidence-based suggestions to prevent and control bullying and suicide-related behavior in schools.
Trends in the Prevalence of Sexual Behaviors, 1991-2009
The National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (NYRBS) monitors priority health risk behaviors that contribute to health and social problems among youth and young adults. This report shows trends, from the data gathered from NYRBS, in sexual behavior among youth and young adults from 1991 to 2009.

Released by the CDC, a new study shows that the alcohol industry has not met regulatory guidelines related to airing alcohol advertising when more than 30% of the audience is younger than the legal drinking age.

Vital Signs: Demographic and Substance Use Trends Among Heroin Users — United States, 2002-2013
FDA and CDC analyzed data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health and National Vital Statistics System during 2002-2013 to assess trends in heroin use among demographic and particular substance-using groups. Results show that heroin use has increased significantly across most demographic groups. Results also suggest an increase in heroin abuse or dependence parallels the increase in heroin-related overdose deaths, and reflects heroin use is occurring in the context of broader poly-substance use.

Today’s Heroin Epidemic
The latest issue of CDC’s Vital Signs includes recent data on heroin use in the United States. According to the report, heroin use has increased across the past decade among most demographic groups, with rates doubling among women and more than doubling among non-Hispanic whites. The data also show that nearly all people who reported heroin use also reported using at least one other drug in the past year, and the rate of heroin-related overdose deaths has nearly quadrupled. The report provides recommendations for what the federal government, states, health care providers, and citizens can do to respond to the heroin epidemic.
