Resources for Pre-Teen and Teen Vaccinations
Several HHS agencies partnered with WebMD to create a webpage with information on preteen and teen vaccines. The site provides answers to common questions about vaccines, and can help parents track the vaccines their adolescent needs and has received.
Fetal and Perinatal Mortality: United States, 2013
This report presents 2013 fetal and perinatal mortality data (PDF, 24 pages) by maternal age, marital status, race, Hispanic origin, and state of residence, as well as by fetal birth weight, gestational age, plurality, and sex. The data show fetal mortality rates were higher for a number of groups, including teenagers, women aged 35 and over, unmarried women, male fetuses, and multiple deliveries. In addition, the fetal mortality rate for non-Hispanic black women was more than twice the rate for non-Hispanic white women.
Study: Large Percentage of Youth with HIV May Lack Immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella
Based on data gathered from more than 600 children and youth exposed to HIV in the womb, a study from NIH and CDC suggests that between one-third and one-half of individuals in the United States who were infected with HIV around the time of birth may not have sufficient immunity to ward off measles, mumps, and rubella, even though they may have been vaccinated against these diseases.

Report: Diabetes 2014 Report Card
The CDC publishes the Diabetes Report Card every two years and includes the most recent information and data available about diabetes, gestational diabetes, pre-diabetes, preventive care practices, risk factors, quality of care, diabetes outcomes, and, to the extent possible, national and state trends. According to the Diabetes 2014 Report Card (PDF, 18 pages), more than 5,000 new cases of Type 2 diabetes are diagnosed among youth under the age of 20 each year.
QuickStats: Percentage of Adults Aged 19-25 Years with a Usual Place of Care, by Race/Ethnicity — National Health Interview Survey, United States, 2010 and 2014
This Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report illustrates the percentage of 19-25 year olds, separated by race, who stated that they had a place they usually turned to for medical care in 2010 and 2014. Results show that between 2010 and 2014, the percentage of young people who had a place to go for medical care increased for Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks.

CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health released the updated Healthy Youth website, which features new tools and resources and is now in a responsive web design, which means that the content can be easily accessed via multiple devices.

The Act Against AIDS Instagram account shares photos and videos to show what the initiative is doing to combat HIV while spotlighting the efforts involved to reach partners and populations at greater risk of HIV.
Report: 2014 BRFSS Data
CDC released the 2014 Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) data. The BRFSS is a state-based surveillance system that uses survey phone calls to collect information on risk behaviors, clinical preventive health practices, and health care access for adults 18 and older.
Report: School-Level Practices to Increase Availability of Fruits, Vegetables, and Whole Grains, and Reduce Sodium in School Meals — United States, 2000, 2006, and 2014
CDC researchers analyzed school-level implementation of the Department of Agriculture’s school nutrition standards, specifically on practices related to fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and sodium. Results show almost all schools offer whole grain foods, vegetables, and fruits during the school day, and the percentage of schools making efforts to increase the availability of these foods and decrease sodium increased from 2000 to 2014.

CDC’s School Health Branch launched the Healthy Schools website. The site will serve as the main resource for information on school-based physical activity and management of chronic conditions. It also contains information on school health guidelines, local school wellness policy, and related resources and tools.

CDC’s Immunization Safety Office launched the redesigned vaccine safety website, which is mobile-friendly and provides new and updated content and resources.
Report: Diagnoses and Prevalence of HIV Infection Among Hispanics or Latinos
CDC researchers analyzed data from the National HIV Surveillance System to determine the numbers and rates of diagnosis of HIV infection among Hispanics or Latinos 13-years-old or older between 2008 and 2013. Results show that Hispanics or Latinos accounted for 20% of HIV diagnoses, and the rate of diagnoses among males was six times the rate among females.
Video: Talking to Teens and Young Adults About Sexually Transmitted Infections
In this video, Dr. Catherine Satterwhite, an epidemiologist in CDC's Division of Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention, discusses the high number of new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States among young people, aged 15-24 years. Dr. Satterwhite provides helpful tips for clinicians who are talking to their young patients about STI prevention and testing. Dr. Satterwhite also explains current HPV vaccine recommendations and STI screening recommendations.
Report: Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Coverage among Female Adolescents in Managed Care Plans
CDC and the National Committee for Quality Assurance analyzed data from the 2013 Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set to determine whether the recommended HPV vaccination series is being administered to adolescents with health insurance. In 2013, the median HPV vaccination coverage level for female adolescents among commercial and Medicaid plans was 12% and 19% respectively, indicating that there are significant opportunities for improvement in HPV vaccination coverage among female adolescents.
Report: 2014 School Health Policies and Practices Study
CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health released the 2014 School Health Policies and Practices Study (SHPPS). SHPPS is a national survey periodically conducted to assess school health policies and practices at the state, district, school, and classroom levels. QuickStats: Death Rates for Teens Aged 15–19 Years, by Sex — National Vital Statistics System, United States, 1999–2013
This report illustrates death rates for teens, aged 15-19 years, between 1999 and 2013. The overall death rate for teens decreased 34.7% during the study period. The study found that three leading causes of death in 2013 were unintentional injuries, suicide, and homicide.
