IOM Recommendations Reflect Importance of Improving Quality of Behavioral Health Services
As highlighted in a recent blog post by HHS officials, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a new report, “Psychosocial Interventions for Mental and Substance Use Disorders.” The report is a result of a collaboration to identify key steps to ensure individuals receiving mental health and substance use services receive evidence-based, high-quality care. It details the reasons for the gap between what is effective and what is currently practiced, and it offers recommendations for how best to address this gap. It proposes a framework to establish standards for psychosocial interventions. The HHS blog post addresses how SAMHSA, ASPE, and other HHS agencies will implement the recommendations in the report.

This PSA for SAMHSA's "Talk. They Hear You." campaign encourages parents, particularly fathers, to start an open dialogue with their children at a young age about drinking.
Talking with College-Bound Young Adults About Alcohol
This resource provides parents with information that can help them talk to their college-bound children about alcohol-use consequences. It also includes a companion video that illustrates the academic and health consequences of underage drinking for new college freshmen.
2014 NSDUH Report on Mental and Substance Use Disorders
SAMHSA’s 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health report shows progress in reducing substance use, especially among adolescents. However, it also indicates that adolescents are experiencing higher levels of depression than in past years.
Perceptions of the U.S. National Tobacco Quitline among Adolescents and Adults: A Qualitative Study, 2012–2013
This purpose of this study was to better understand the knowledge and perception of tobacco quitlines, which provide tobacco users free telephone counseling and cessation services, among adolescents and adults. Professionals can use the results of this study to inform future marketing efforts for quitline services.

Combustible and Smokeless Tobacco Use among High School Athletes — US, 2001–2013
CDC released a study that uses data from the 2001–2013 National Youth Risk Behavior Surveys to better understand the prevalence of combustible and smokeless tobacco use among high school athletes. Results show that current use of any tobacco product significantly declined for all students from 2001 to 2013. Current smokeless tobacco use significantly increased among athletes and did not change among non-athletes. In 2013, compared with non-athletes, athletes had significantly higher odds of being current smokeless tobacco users but significantly lower odds of being current combustible tobacco users.
Sports and Mental Health
This blog post describes the benefits of participating in sports, as well as the risks. It highlights many of the programs and resources available to support athletes who may be struggling with mental illness or substance abuse.

Report: Monthly Variation in Substance Use Initiation Among Full-time College Students
This study tracked substance use initiation patterns by month for college students, ages 18-22. Results show that initiation of marijuana and alcohol use often peak in the summer months, while winter appears to be the peak season for students to start using prescription drugs.
Reports: Regional Behavioral Health Barometers
SAMHSA released a series of behavioral health barometers presenting data for each of the 10 HHS regions of the United States. Each report uses data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health related to youth and adult mental health and substance use and treatment.

Report: Frequency of Tobacco Use Among Middle and High School Students
Researchers from CDC and FDA analyzed data from the 2014 National Youth Tobacco Survey to determine how frequently middle school and high school students in the United States used cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco products. Among current users in high school, frequent use was most prevalent among smokeless tobacco users, followed by cigarette smokers, e-cigarette users, and cigar smokers. Among current users in middle school, frequent use was greatest among smokeless tobacco users, followed by cigarette smokers, cigar smokers, and e-cigarette users. Current use of two or more types of tobacco products was common.
Report: Flavored Tobacco Product Use Among Middle and High School Students
Researchers from CDC and FDA analyzed data from the 2014 National Youth Tobacco Survey to determine the prevalence of current use of flavored e-cigarette, hookah tobacco, cigar, pipe tobacco, or smokeless tobacco products, and menthol cigarettes among middle and high school students. An estimated 70% of all current youth tobacco users had used at least one flavored tobacco product in the past 30 days. Among current users, 63.3% used a flavored e-cigarette, 60.6% had used flavored hookah tobacco, and 63.5% had used a flavored cigar.

Report: Tobacco Use Among Middle and High School Students — United States, 2011–2015
This report illustrates the prevalence and trends of current use of seven tobacco products among middle and high school students in the United States between 2011 and 2015. The data show that in 2015, e-cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among this population.
Report: A Day in the Life of College Students: Substance Use Facts
This report (PDF, 7 pages) presents facts about substance use among college students, ages 18 to 22, using combined data from the 2011 to 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. According to the report, more than one-third of college students engaged in binge drinking, and about one in five used an illicit drug in the last month.
