The Safe Communities approach represents a new way community programs are established and managed. All partners participate as equals in developing solutions, sharing successes, assuming risks, and building a community structure and process to continue improvement of community life through the reduction of injuries and costs.

Free Bicycle Safety Curriculum
The Society of Health and Physical Educators and NHTSA have collaborated to create a new, free bicycle safety curriculum that physical education teachers and recreation specialists can use when working with students in grades 6-12.
Seat Belt Safety — Tweens (ages 8 to 14)
A new campaign targeted to parents and caregivers of tweens aims to increase the proper use of seat belts among young people, ages 8-14. The goal of the campaign is to promote the development of good seat belt practices that will stay with them for life.

Federal TRIO Programs
The Federal TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes six outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.
Choice Neighborhoods
The Choice Neighborhoods initiative will transform distressed neighborhoods and public and assisted projects into viable and sustainable mixed-income neighborhoods by linking housing improvements with appropriate services, schools, public assets, transportation, and access to jobs. A strong emphasis will be placed on local community planning for access to high-quality educational opportunities, including early childhood education. In addition to public housing authorities, the initiative will involve local governments, non-profits, and for-profit developers in undertaking comprehensive local planning with residents and the community.
