Prevalence and Implementation Fidelity of Research-Based Prevention Programs in Public Schools
This report from the Study of the Implementation of Research-Based Programs to Prevent Youth Substance Abuse and School Crime offers the following information which can be applied to gang prevention efforts: collecting background information on substance abuse and school crime, identifying research-based programs and practices, using data collection instruments, developing implementation fidelity measures, and collecting, processing, and analyzing data.
Promise Neighborhoods
To address the challenges faced by students living in communities of concentrated poverty, Promise Neighborhoods grantees and their partner organizations will plan to provide services from early learning to college and career, including programs to improve the health, safety, and stability of neighborhoods, and boost family engagement in student learning.
Quality Education Services Are Critical for Youth Involved With the Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare Systems
In May 2010, the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University released the monograph ”Addressing the Unmet Educational Needs of Children and Youth in the Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare Systems” (PDF, 74 pages), which examines a number of topics relevant to the education and experiences of youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. This new practice guide (PDF, 27 pages) developed by NDTAC examines the principle included in the monograph that quality education services are critical for youth involved with the juvenile justice and child welfare systems, and offers a range of practices and strategies that juvenile justice, child welfare, and education professionals can use to improve education programming and outcomes for youth in their care.
Registered Apprenticeship College Consortium
The Departments of Education and Labor have launched a new Registered Apprenticeship–College Consortium which will enable graduates of Registered Apprenticeship programs to earn college credit for their Registered Apprenticeship experience and accelerate attainment of an associate or bachelor degree.
Serving Youth in Confinement
This letter to Chief State School Officers and State Attorneys General, issued by Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, highlights the importance of supporting youth in juvenile justice facilities. 2015 NDTAC National Conference Materials
NDTAC held its 2015 National Conference, “Looking Ahead: Preparing for the Future of Your State Title I, Part D Program,” in Arlington, Virginia, in May 2015. The conference brought together Title I, Part D coordinators, experts in the field, and ED and NDTAC staff to explore federal and state topics related to effective program administration and the education of youth who are neglected, delinquent, or at risk. New Measures to Combat Sexual Violence
This blog post describes the outcomes from the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault and the efforts of the Office for Civil Rights to improve the coordination of ED’s enforcement efforts related to sexual violence. The post also outlines the new regulations that took effect on July 1, 2015, with the implementation of the changes to the Clery Act by the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013. These regulations increase transparency and require institutions to make enhanced disclosures regarding disciplinary proceedings and protective measures following sexual crimes, as well as have training programs to inform the campus community about awareness and prevention.
Second Chance Pell Pilot Program for Incarcerated Individuals
The Second Chance Pell Pilot program will test new models to allow incarcerated individuals to receive Pell Grants and pursue postsecondary education. The goal is to increase access to high-quality educational opportunities and help these individuals successfully transition out of prison and back into the classroom or the workforce.
