The DoD STARBASE is an educational program sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. Students can participate in challenging "hands-on, mind-on" activities in aviation, science, technology, engineering, math, and space exploration. The program provides students with 20-25 hours of stimulating experiences at National Guard, Navy, Marine, Air Force Reserve and Air Force bases across the nation.

This Department of Defense-sponsored website features content for children, tweens, and teens of military families. The site provides an online community that allows these young people to support one another while learning coping and resilience-building skills.

The mission of the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program is to intervene in and reclaim the lives of at-risk youth to produce program graduates with the values, skills, education and self-discipline necessary to succeed as adults.

The Volunteer Clearinghouse serves the Corps of Engineers nationwide to link potential volunteers with Park Rangers at lakes and waterways that need them. It provides information about the volunteer program and directs people to the point of contact, usually a Park Ranger, at the lake or location of interest.

This site helps young adults plan their next steps in life by bringing together the most recently available information about colleges, careers and military services. Designed primarily for individuals between 16 and 24, the site features information drawn and collated from the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Defense, Education and Labor. The site contains information on more than 1,000 military and civilian careers and nearly 7,000 accredited colleges, universities and trade schools, and can serve as a central resource for valuable background on college admission requirements, employment trends and military benefits.

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) offers a Virtual High School (DVHS), which provides more than 70 online courses to students in DoDEA secondary schools to meet DoDEA eligible students’ academic and career-oriented goals. DVHS also offers the Domestic Transition Program, which provides students transitioning from an overseas DoDEA-supported program or Non-DoD Schools Program to a local public school or an accredited educational program in the United States, allowing for continuity in students’ education.

This clearinghouse helps providers identify, select, and implement evidence-based programs and practices to address wide-ranging family and mental health issues. The searchable database includes effective and promising intervention programs as well as resources and strategies to ensure the welfare of military families. 

The ConnectED Initiative aims to bring America’s students into the digital age by ensuring access to the Internet and other educational technologies by using existing federal funds and partnering with businesses, states, districts, communities, and schools.

First Lady Michelle Obama invites school and community leaders to promote the students’ success by hosting a College Signing Day at local high schools. Use the College Signing Day Toolkit (PDF, 22 pages) to plan an event to honor students’ commitments to complete their education beyond high school. 

Let Girls Learn is a new government-wide initiative focused on helping adolescent girls complete their education and pursue their goals. Let Girls Learn will build on the work of the Peace Corps and USAID,  and will utilize partnerships with NGOs, businesses, and foundations, in an effort to promote the education and success of girls worldwide. 

On October 30, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) held its first Young Leaders Dialogue (YLD) Google+ Hangout on Education. The first YLD focused on education, and more than 500 students and professionals RSVP’d and attended watch parties. Small group discussions that focused on the needs of various campuses and communities were also held.

The My Brother’s Keeper Initiative was launched in February 2014 to address the persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color. This 90-day report outlines the initial recommendations developed by the My Brother’s Keeper Task Force and offers a blueprint for action by government, business, nonprofit, philanthropic, faith and community partners.

The White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault has developed a new resource that can help colleges and univerisites in their efforts to address address sexual:

• Climate Surveys: Useful Tools to Help Colleges and Universities in Their Efforts to Reduce and Prevent Sexual Assault (PDF, 37 pages) provides an overview of how to plan and conduct a climate survey as part of a comprehensive effort to address sexual assault on campus, as well as an example of an empirically-informed survey based on best practices from the field.

• Building Partnerships with Local Rape Crisis Centers: Developing a Memorandum of Understanding (PDF, 5 pages) provides information on developing memorandums of understanding (MOUs) to strengthen sexual assault prevention and response programs by developing partnerships with local rape crisis centers.

On February 28, 2014 the White House held its first-ever Student Film Festival, screening 16 official selections that highlight why technology is so important and how it will change the educational experience for students in the future. The 2015 White House Film Festival received more than 1,500 submissions from K-12 students who created short films about the theme, “The Impact of Giving Back.” On March 20, 2015, the official top selections were shown at The White House, and the screening was streamed live online.

President Obama has unveiled a new proposal that would make two years of community college free for students who attend atleast half-time, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and make steady progress toward completing their program. 

On December 3, 2014, The White House hosted the Tribal Nations Conference. At this event, leaders from federally recognized Native nations, the President, cabinet officials, and The White Council on Native American Affairs discussed key issues facing tribes. During the event, the Obama administration announced the launch of Generation Indigenous, a comprehensive, culturally appropriate initiative that will focus on removing barriers to success for Native youth.
