Project Launch
Project LAUNCH is a grant program of the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) which seeks to promote the wellness of young children birth to age eight. Using a public health approach, Project LAUNCH focuses on improving the systems that serve young children and address their physical, emotional, social, cognitive and behavioral growth. The goal: for all children to reach physical, social, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive milestones.
School Health Index (SHI)
Habits and practices related to health and safety are influenced by the entire school environment. Schools can use this self-assessment and planning tool to improve their health and safety policies and programs. The SHI has eight different modules including School Health and Safety Policies and Environment; Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services; and Family and Community Involvement.

Supporting Materials: Promoting Health Equity Through Education Programs and Policies
The Community Preventive Services Task Force offers recommendations, findings, and other materials on a variety of programs related to academic success, health, and well-being of children and teens. Intended for center-based, full-day kindergarten, high school completion, and out-of-school time academic programs, recommendations are based on a systematic review of the scientific literature.

The Association Between School-Based Physical Activity, Including Physical Education, and Academic Performance
The report indicates that school-based physical activity may help improve students' grades and test scores and positively affect other factors that influence academic achievement. The report also concludes that adding time during the school day for physical activity does not appear to take away from academic performance.
Teaching Soft Skills Through Workplace Simulation in Classroom Settings
The Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy provides a resource focused on how schools and employment opportunities can teach soft skills, specifically for students with disabilities. Relevant soft skills, as mentioned in the Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills, include: teamwork, problem solving, effective use of resources and effective coommunication.

These Online High Schools Didn’t Make the Grade
FTC has charged companies known as “diploma mills” for selling fake high school diplomas that they promise can be used to apply for college and employment. Users may be dealing with a diploma mill if the company states that they charge a flat fee; can provide a diploma in months, weeks, or days; require little or no coursework; or can offer a degree solely for “work or life experience.”

At this event, leaders from federally recognized Native nations, the President, cabinet officials, and The White Council on Native American Affairs discussed key issues facing tribes. During the event, the Obama administration announced the launch of Generation Indigenous, a comprehensive, culturally appropriate initiative that will focus on removing barriers to success for Native youth.

This new guide, released by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, was developed to support Hispanic students in their efforts to enroll in and afford postsecondary education. Available in English and Spanish, the guide includes recommendations on how to prepare a college application, tips for choosing the right college, and information about financing options, including resources for students granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and non-U.S. citizen students.

Reach Higher "Beating the Odds" Summit
On July 23, 2015, First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed 140 college-bound students, all of whom have overcome great odds to go to college, to the White House for the Reach Higher “Beating the Odds” Summit. The summit celebrated these students' accomplishments, while also providing them with tips and resources to better prepare them for when they go to college this fall.
DoDEA Virtual High School
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) offers a Virtual High School (DVHS), which provides more than 70 online courses to students in DoDEA secondary schools to meet DoDEA eligible students’ academic and career-oriented goals. DVHS also offers the Domestic Transition Program, which provides students transitioning from an overseas DoDEA-supported program or Non-DoD Schools Program to a local public school or an accredited educational program in the United States, allowing for continuity in students’ education.
