New Measures to Combat Sexual Violence
This blog post describes the outcomes from the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault and the efforts of the Office for Civil Rights to improve the coordination of ED’s enforcement efforts related to sexual violence. The post also outlines the new regulations that took effect on July 1, 2015, with the implementation of the changes to the Clery Act by the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013. These regulations increase transparency and require institutions to make enhanced disclosures regarding disciplinary proceedings and protective measures following sexual crimes, as well as have training programs to inform the campus community about awareness and prevention.
Recent Events: AfAmWomenLead Initiative
This blog post describes the African American Women Lead (AfAmWomenLead) Initiative, established by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans to support the development of Black women and girls. On March 12, 2016, AfAmWomenLead participating organizations throughout the country engaged in a day of service, celebrating cultural experiences and exploration.

This resource (PDF, 6 pages) describes the stark consequences of youth unemployment, especially among youth of color, and provides an overview of “what works” for youth workforce development. It highlights critical strategies and best practices, exemplars, and additional resources to support local practitioners’ efforts to develop and implement workforce development programs for young people in their communities.

These technical assistance guides assist collaborations among DOL, ED, states, local workforce development areas, other workforce and education partners, and social service providers with serving out-of-school youth. Specifically, strategies are included in the guides for serving out-of-school English learners, current and former foster youth, and justice-involved youth.

This data set provides information on program-level outcomes of college students preparing for gainful employment that can be used by prospective students and their families to weigh their options. Overall, the data show graduates of career training programs at public institutions generally fare better than those of comparable programs at for-profit colleges, earning higher salaries and being more prepared to enter higher earning fields.
Report: Student Victimization in U.S. Schools: Results from the 2015 School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey
This report examines student criminal victimization and the characteristics of crime victims and nonvictims. It also provides findings on student reports of the presence of gangs and weapons, and the availability of drugs and alcohol at school, student reports of bullying, and fear and avoidance behaviors of crime victims and nonvictims at school.

Report: High School Students’ Views on Who Influences Their Thinking about Education and Careers
This report examines who public high school students view as their main influence when they are considering postsecondary education and careers. Results show students relied on family members as the main influence when thinking about postsecondary education, and students relied on themselves primarily when thinking about careers.
