Guidance: Education Department Reiterates — Title I Funding Can Be Used to Serve Homeless Students
This article explains the guidance provided in a recent “Dear Colleague” letter (PDF, 4 pages) issued by the Department of Education which explains how school districts can use Title I funds to help children and youth experiencing homelessness. Some examples of ways districts can use the funds are to transport homeless students to and from school, pay the salaries of staff who work with homeless youth, and to generally meet the needs of these students.

CDC’s School Health Branch launched the Healthy Schools website. The site will serve as the main resource for information on school-based physical activity and management of chronic conditions. It also contains information on school health guidelines, local school wellness policy, and related resources and tools.

Report: 2014 School Health Policies and Practices Study
CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health released the 2014 School Health Policies and Practices Study (SHPPS). SHPPS is a national survey periodically conducted to assess school health policies and practices at the state, district, school, and classroom levels. Two additional resources accompany the report: 2014 Overview (PDF 4 pages) and Trends Over Time: 2000-2014 (PDF, 6 pages).

Users can complete a prescreening questionnaire to determine their eligibility criteria for resources and programs and learn how to apply. This guidance (PDF, 28 pages) provides information to states, school districts, and child welfare agencies on new provisions in the Every Student Succeeds Act for supporting children and youth in foster care.

Report: Physical Education Attendance Among U.S. High School Students
This report analyzes long-term trends in physical education attendance among high school students in the United States over the past 20 years. The report shows that half of high school students do not attend physical education classes and attendance in these classes steadily declines as students move through high school.

Report: Substance Use Among 12th Grade Aged Youths, by Dropout Status
This report uses combined data from the National Surveys on Drug Use and Health from 2002 to 2014 to identify 12th grade-aged youth who had dropped out of school and to describe their substance use compared to their peers who were currently attending school.

This self-paced, online training module provides an overview of the HECAT, describes how to use the HECAT to develop or select a curriculum, and shares information and examples to ensure curriculum decisions meet student needs. School districts and schools can use the HECAT to select or develop appropriate and effective health education curricula and improve the delivery of health education.

After a Suicide: A Toolkit for Schools, Second Edition
This toolkit, developed by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, can assist schools in implementing a coordinated response to the suicide death of a student. This second edition includes new information and tools that middle and high schools can use to help the school community cope and reduce suicide risk.
Report: Opportunities to Improve the Financial Capability and Financial Well-being of Postsecondary Students
This report describes the state of financial education (PDF, 48 pages) among students and illustrates current efforts to enhance financial education with respect to student understanding of topics related to financing postsecondary education and making sound financial decisions while enrolled in school and beyond. The report also identifies programs that promote or enhance financial literacy for students, including those that involve partnerships between nonprofit organizations.

This webpage provides a detailed overview of Youth Advisory Councils (YACs). It describes the role YACs play in improving the schools and communities they serve, discusses how they can use data to make decisions and create action plans, and outlines the structure of a YAC.
John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood
The John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood (the Chafee program) provides funding to support youth/ young adults in or formerly in foster care in their transition to adulthood. The program is funded through formula grants awarded to child welfare agencies in States (including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) and participating Tribes. Chafee funds are used to assist youth/ young adults in a wide variety of areas designed to support a successful transition to adulthood. Activities and programs include, but are not limited to, help with education, employment, financial management, housing, emotional support and assured connections to caring adults. Specific services and supports are determined by the child welfare agency, vary by State, locality and agency, and are often based on the individual needs of the young person. Many State or local agencies contract with private organizations to deliver services to young people.
