Open Education Week 2015
Posted in observance of Open Education Week, this blog post highlights the new U.S. Open Government Partnership National Action Plan (PDF, 5 pages). School Climate and Discipline Guidance Package
The Departments of Education and Justice created a guidance package to help schools, districts, and states understand the issue of discriminatory school discipline and the role they play in improving school climate and administering student discipline without discriminating on the basis of race, color, or national origin.

Educators Gather at the White House to Rethink School Discipline
Teams of superintendents, principals, and teachers from across the country gathered on July 22, 2015, for "Rethink Discipline," a daylong conference at the White House on creating positive school climates and implementing effective discipline practices. As part of the conference, new resources and initiatives were announced to assist school leaders in their efforts to reduce suspensions and expulsions, and provide school environments that are safe, supportive, and conducive to teaching and learning.

The English Learner (EL) Toolkit helps state and local education agencies help ELs by fulfilling their obligations under state law. This report (PDF, 40 pages) describes the findings from “Combating Religious Discrimination Today,” a community engagement initiative designed to promote religious freedom and challenge religious discrimination. The report provides an overview of what was shared at several roundtables held across the country with diverse stakeholders, including religious leaders, civil rights organizations, and community members.

This report (PDF, 12 pages), developed by NIJ’s Comprehensive School Safety Initiative, draws on data collected by multiple federal agencies to examine common beliefs pertaining to school safety statistics and provides evidence to support or dispel each of them.

Volunteer.gov is America's Natural and Cultural Resources Volunteer Portal built and maintained by the Federal Interagency Team on Volunteerism (FITV) that is comprised of volunteer program coordinators from three Cabinet level departments. Since its initial deployment in 2002, the Portal has grown into a strategic alliance of governmental partners from all levels - local, State, and Federal Government dedicated to serving the volunteer community by populating this e-Government site with volunteer positions and events for citizens interested in volunteer service benefitting our Nation's resources.
