Episodes one and two of the new five-part podcast series entitled Advances in Supporting Kinship Caregivers are now available. The first episode features a discussion of Rhode Island’s approach to kinship support services and the second episode focuses on Washington State’s approach to providing kinship support services. Topics discussed in the two episodes include but are not limited to: 

  • Why kinship caregivers should be treated differently by agencies and caseworkers, and the specific challenges kinship caregivers face. 

  • How to strengthen relationships between caseworkers and kinship caregivers. 

  • Differences in formal and informal kinship caregivers and the differences caseworkers may have to navigate when working with each. 

  • Cultural considerations caseworkers and others should be aware of when working with rural Latinx communities and families.

This tool is available for schools to estimate how they can reduce virus particles, including COVID-19 particles, in classrooms year-round. The tool shows how simple methods, including running HEPA air purifiers, increasing the use of outdoor air in HVAC systems when possible, and running exhaust fans, can reduce virus particles. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will provide nearly $1 billion in additional funding to schools to support the purchase of American-grown foods for their meal programs. The $943 million boost from the Department is provided through USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation. Funds will be distributed by state agencies to schools across the country, so they can purchase domestically grown foods for their meal programs. Learn more.

  • select security measures;  

  • student criminal victimization; and 

  • personal fear, avoidance behaviors, fighting, and weapon-carrying at school.

This study (PDF, 65 pages) provides new information about the experiences of LGBTQ people who have attended four-year college or graduate school using data collected from the nationally representative Access to Higher Education Survey. Information about campus climate, experiences of belonging, discrimination, violence, mental health, educational aspirations, and sources of financial support were explored for LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ people ages 18 to 40. This report (PDF, 16 pages) is the third in the Some College, No Credential (SCNC) report series, which seeks to understand the educational trajectories of millions of U.S. adults who left postsecondary education without receiving a postsecondary credential and are no longer enrolled. The report identifies the levels of opportunity within each state for re-engaging SCNC students in the postsecondary attainment pipeline by tracking SCNC student outcomes annually (e.g., “Re-Enrollment” after stop-out, completion of “First Credential,” and “Perseverance” as indicated by continuous enrollment beyond first re-enrollment).
